Current Projects, Grades 4-6

4th Grade
Students are presenting their Ben Franklin PowerPoint presentations to their classmates for the next two-three weeks. There will be a quiz on Ben Franklin at the conclusion of the class presentations. Check back in June to view selected 4th grade Ben Franklin presentations.

5th Grade
Fifth grade students are creating A, B, C PowerPoint presentations on a current curricular subject area. Mr. Adams’ Class will create an A…Z book using geometry terms; Mrs. DiGiovanna/Miss Lapinski’s class will create an A…Z book using information from the American Revolution; Ms. Martorina’s class will create an A…Z book using weather-related terms and finally, Mrs. Shutz/Miss Goldston’s class will create an A…Z book on Space.

Students used their textbooks and the Internet to find a word that begins with each letter of the alphabet relating to their assigned topic. Students then created a PowerPoint presentation in the form of “A is for …” putting the word they chose for “A” on the slide. Next, students used Google.com-images to find an appropriate graphic to depict their chosen word. A background and transitions were added. Finally, students animated their projects. Check back here in a few weeks to few selected student samples.

6th Grade
Sixth grade students are beginning a unit on tessellations. A tessellation is a series of interlocking shapes. These can be made by putting together a series of translations that are comprised of reflections, rotations and transformations. M.C. Escher was a famous artist that creating many exciting tessellations.

Students will be using Microsoft Paint to create original tessellation designs. Student work will be posted here when complete. Check back in mid June to see what our students have designed.

Technology Curriculum

Students in Grade 4 learn basic computer and word processing skills such as opening and saving files to both a local and network drive; copying, cutting and pasting text and graphics from one application to another and from the Internet to a different application. They learn to change the size, font, and color of text; to left-justify, center justify and right justify text, to perform spelling and grammar checks. Students use the software application Microsoft Office Word 2003, running on Windows XP.

Fifth Grade students focus on spreadsheet skills. Students employ the software application, EXCEL, to achieve this goal. They learn how to enter formulas to add, subtract, multiply and divide. They also use EXCEL to create bar and pie charts. Students analyze graphs and report their findings in Word.

Sixth Grade students focus on the software application Microsoft Access to create and manipulate databases. Students learn how to create a simple database, sort their database and then create a report using the Wizard to display the data in a meaningful way.

All students utilize the Internet to conduct research. Students use Microsoft Office PowerPoint to display this information for presentation to their peers. Students may also participate in curricular appropriate webquests.

Students may also use additional software such as Inspiration, Kid Pix Deluxe 4, Type to Learn, Print Shop Deluxe and Movie Maker throughout the school year.
